Weekly Challenges - March 30 - April 3
1. Draw a picture and write in your journal about how you know it is springtime. What do you see outside that tells you we are at the beginning of spring? (Hints: temperature, rain, birds, etc.) Write a story about your picture. (JKs - dictate your story to your parent, SKs - try to write your story by sounding out words) Don't forget to write your name using upper and lower case letters. (JKs - first name only, SKs - first and last names). 2. Find an item in your house that begins with the letter "Jj". Practice sounding it out using "rocking fist" every day.
Today's Challenges
1. PAT Letter of the Week Jj - Write 5 words that begin with the letter Jj and draw a picture of each word.
2. Cereal Estimate - Estimate how many spoonfuls it will take to finish a bowl of cereal. Count each spoonful as you eat. (This may apply to a plate of pasta, a sandwich or any meal.)
3. Palm Sunday - This Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most special time of the year! Watch the Saddleback Kids video, The Story of Easter (Triumphal Entry) with your family. Make a palm branch or colour a palm leaf. Colouring pages and crafts may be found at http://clipart-library.com/palm-branch-coloring-page.html or http://www.celebratingwiththebug.com/meaning-of-easter/.

- bowl or jar (one for each egg)
- Fill each bowl 1/2 full with vinegar.

- Place the egg in the bowl for 48-72 hours.
- When the surface of the water has a scummy film, the eggs are ready to come out.
- Remove from the jars (carefully) and rinse them in water.
Guiding Questions:
- What do you think will happen?
- How did the egg change?
- What happened to the egg's shell?
- Can you describe the texture of the egg?
- Will the egg roll?
- Will the egg bounce?
Try putting other eggs in different liquids to see if they produce a different or similar reaction.
Resources for Coping with COVID-19
These are extremely challenging times for everyone, especially our little ones! Many, many children are feeling anxious about their safety and well-being. Please check your email for a list of helpful resources created by our school board.
Guide for Parents
Here are some activities that you can be doing at home every day to ensure your child's skills are maintained.- Read to your child every day. Ask them to tell you about the story, ask them their favourite part and why.
- Have your child present PAT items every day.
- JK: practice writing your first name.
- SK: practice writing your first and last names.
- Keep writing in the journals we sent home.
- Practice counting toys and items around the house. This develops one-to-one correspondence, each item is counted once.
- Play board games with dice as this develops subitizing skills, the ability to recognize quantities without counting.
- Ask your child to estimate how many objects they have, for example "how many grapes do you have left?"
- Practice adding and subtracting with their toys, "I have 5 cars and you have 3 cars. How many cars do we have altogether?"
- Set up an art corner for your child to draw pictures, paint, create chalk pictures, tape paper to a wall and create a mural.
